    Critical human resource development: enabling alternative subject positions within a master of arts in human resource development educational programme

    We examine how students made sense of the learning that occurred within a curriculum that challenged �traditional� human resource development (HRD), a curriculum informed by critical content and critical process. We draw attention to the identity work undertaken by students who were introduced to critical HRD and examine how this discourse enabled alternative �subject positions�. Drawing on an ethnographic research study informed by a discourse perspective on learning and identity, we explore how students reflected and made sense of their learning and identify eight subject positions: academic practitioner, frustrated practitioner researcher, deep thinking performer, politically aware and active, powerful boundary worker, personally empowered, emancipatory practitioner and personally empowered but disengaged. Drawing on these findings, we question whether the introduction of critical approaches to HRD afforded or prevented articulation and interchange between this educational programme and the students' employing organizations, highlighting the implications for HRD research and practice

    Contributing to a revival and a research agenda: the psychology of entrepreneurship

    This paper highlights a renewed interest in the psychology of entrepreneurship which examines a taken-for-granted assumption within Business School programmes, that successful entrepreneurs can be taught. This paper reports the findings of a pilot study which explores the psychological profiles of self-identified entrepreneurs. The pilot study analyses the relationships between personality, motivation, individual demographic factors and entrepreneurial success factors using commercially available personality and motivation psychometrics. In doing so the paper presents a methodological contribution to this emerging area of research and practice. The applications of this research could include the use of these tools in screening processes for funding business start-ups and the focusing of support to aspiring and developing entrepreneurs. Feedback on the proposed approach is welcomed as is discussion with others who are interested in researching the psychology of entrepreneurship and how a better understanding of this inform can economic and social development

    Nonlinear bias correction for satellite data assimilation using Taylor series polynomials

    Output from a high-resolution ensemble data assimilation system is used to assess the ability of an innovative nonlinear bias correction (BC) method that uses a Taylor series polynomial expansion of the observation-minus background departures to remove linear and nonlinear conditional biases from all-sky satellite infrared brightness temperatures. Univariate and multivariate experiments were performed in which the satellite zenith angle and variables sensitive to clouds and water vapor were used as the BC predictors. The results showed that even though the bias of the entire observation departure distribution is equal to zero regardless of the order of the Taylor series expansion, there are often large conditional biases that vary as a nonlinear function of the BC predictor. The linear 1st order term had the largest impact on the entire distribution as measured by reductions in variance; however, large conditional biases often remained in the distribution when plotted as a function of the predictor. These conditional biases were typically reduced to near zero when the nonlinear 2nd and 3rd order terms were used. The univariate results showed that variables sensitive to the cloud top height are effective BC predictors especially when higher order Taylor series terms are used. Comparison of the statistics for clear-sky and cloudy-sky observations revealed that nonlinear departures are more important for cloudy-sky observations as signified by the much larger impact of the 2nd and 3rd order terms on the conditional biases. Together, these results indicate that the nonlinear BC method is able to effectively remove the bias from all-sky infrared observation departures

    Estimating correlated observation error statistics using an ensemble transform Kalman filter

    For certain observing types, such as those that are remotely sensed, the observation errors are correlated and these correlations are state- and time-dependent. In this work, we develop a method for diagnosing and incorporating spatially correlated and time-dependent observation error in an ensemble data assimilation system. The method combines an ensemble transform Kalman filter with a method that uses statistical averages of background and analysis innovations to provide an estimate of the observation error covariance matrix. To evaluate the performance of the method, we perform identical twin experiments using the Lorenz ’96 and Kuramoto-Sivashinsky models. Using our approach, a good approximation to the true observation error covariance can be recovered in cases where the initial estimate of the error covariance is incorrect. Spatial observation error covariances where the length scale of the true covariance changes slowly in time can also be captured. We find that using the estimated correlated observation error in the assimilation improves the analysis

    Oxidation mechanism in metal nanoclusters: Zn nanoclusters to ZnO hollow nanoclusters

    Zn nanoclusters (NCs) are deposited by Low-energy cluster beam deposition technique. The mechanism of oxidation is studied by analysing their compositional and morphological evolution over a long span of time (three years) due to exposure to ambient atmosphere. It is concluded that the mechanism proceeds in two steps. In the first step, the shell of ZnO forms over Zn NCs rapidly up to certain limiting thickness: with in few days -- depending upon the size -- Zn NCs are converted to Zn-ZnO (core-shell), Zn-void-ZnO, or hollow ZnO type NCs. Bigger than ~15 nm become Zn-ZnO (core-shell) type: among them, NCs above ~25 nm could able to retain their initial geometrical shapes (namely triangular, hexagonal, rectangular and rhombohedral), but ~25 to 15 nm size NCs become irregular or distorted geometrical shapes. NCs between ~15 to 5 nm become Zn-void-ZnO type, and smaller than ~5 nm become ZnO hollow sphere type i.e. ZnO hollow NCs. In the second step, all Zn-void-ZnO and Zn-ZnO (core-shell) structures are converted to hollow ZnO NCs in a slow and gradual process, and the mechanism of conversion proceeds through expansion in size by incorporating ZnO monomers inside the shell. The observed oxidation behaviour of NCs is compared with theory of Cabrera - Mott on low-temperature oxidation of metal.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Insider research and reflective practice: getting published: extending an experiment in critical friendship

    Purpose: This aim of this working paper is to connect a community of scholarly practitioners who are passionate about insider researcher and who are willing to support each other in doing, writing and publishing this form of research. Approach: The paper is grounded in a conceptualization of knowledge creation as socially interactive, contingent and multi-faceted acknowledging that researchers and practitioners ‘frame’ research questions and findings in the light of their previous experience and tacit knowledge Research and practice implications: To develop a plan for action to include: seeking sources of funding, collaborative publication and dissemination in order to release the potential of insider research and in doing contribute to a CHRD agenda. Originality/value: In presenting this paper we extend the potential of a ‘critical friend’ approach in order to connect and support insider researchers who wish to explore and progress the potential contribution of ‘actionable’ knowledge in both practice and scholarly domains
